Proximity Switches: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Inductive and Capacitive proximity switches?
Inductive Proximity Switches use an electromagnetic field to detect metallic objects only (iron, steel, copper, etc.). They are extremely robust and immune to non-metallic contaminants. Capacitive Proximity Switches detect changes in capacitance, allowing them to sense both metallic and non-metallic materials such as glass, plastic, wood, and even liquids through container walls.
Should I choose a Flush (Shielded) or Non-flush (Unshielded) sensor?
Flush (Shielded) sensors have a metal band around the sensing face, allowing them to be mounted level with the metal mounting surface without interference. Non-flush (Unshielded) sensors do not have this band and require a "clear zone" around the head. The benefit of Non-flush models is a significantly longer sensing distance (up to 50% more) compared to Flush models of the same size.
How does the target material affect the sensing distance (Correction Factors)?
Inductive sensors are calibrated for Mild Steel (Fe360). Other metals reduce the effective sensing range: Stainless Steel (~0.7x), Aluminum (~0.4x), and Copper (~0.3x). If you are detecting aluminum, we recommend our "Factor 1" series, which maintains the same sensing distance for all metals.
What are NPN and PNP outputs, and which one do I need?
This depends on your PLC/Controller logic. PNP (Sourcing) output connects the load to the positive terminal when triggered; it is most common in Europe and North America. NPN (Sinking) output connects the load to the negative terminal; it is widely used in Asia (Japan, Korea, China). Ensure your sensor matches your PLC's input specifications.
Can proximity switches operate in oily or vibrating environments?
Yes. Unlike mechanical limit switches, proximity switches have no moving parts and are fully potted with resin. This makes them highly resistant to vibration and mechanical shock. For oily environments, we offer specialized oil-resistant PUR cables and stainless steel housings that prevent cutting fluids from degrading the sensor.
How do I prevent mutual interference between two sensors mounted close together?
When two sensors are mounted near each other, their magnetic fields can overlap, causing false triggers. To prevent this, maintain a minimum distance of 2-3 times the diameter between sensors, or use models with staggered frequencies. For parallel mounting, ensure the distance between sensing faces is at least 3-5 times the rated sensing range.
What is the benefit of an Analog Output (0-10V or 4-20mA) proximity sensor?
Standard proximity switches are "On/Off." Analog Proximity Sensors provide a continuous signal proportional to the distance of the target. This is ideal for measuring thickness, monitoring shaft eccentricity, or controlling tension where precise distance feedback is required rather than just presence detection.
Are these sensors protected against wiring errors?
Our industrial series includes built-in Reverse Polarity Protection, Short-Circuit Protection, and Overload Protection. If you accidentally swap the positive and negative wires or overload the output, the sensor will deactivate to prevent permanent damage to the internal circuitry.
