Technical FAQ: Slot & Fork Photoelectric Sensors

What is the primary advantage of a Slot Sensor over a standard Through-Beam sensor?
The biggest advantage is permanent optical alignment. In a standard through-beam setup, you must align two separate units (transmitter and receiver). In a Slot Sensor (U-shaped sensor), both components are fixed in a single rigid frame. This eliminates alignment errors caused by machine vibration, accidental bumping, or difficult installation environments.
Should I choose an Infrared (IR) or Visible Red Light slot sensor?
It depends on your application. Infrared sensors (880nm) are ideal for label gap detection because IR light can penetrate certain semi-transparent materials, making the difference between a label and the backing paper clearer. Visible Red Light sensors are preferred when you need a visible spot for easy positioning or when detecting very small opaque objects.
Can these sensors detect transparent or clear labels?
Detecting clear labels on clear backing is challenging for standard photoelectric sensors. For this, we recommend our High-Sensitivity Infrared Series or specialized Ultrasonic Slot Sensors. Standard slot sensors with a sensitivity potentiometer can often detect translucent labels by fine-tuning the threshold, but for 100% transparent materials, ultrasonic technology is the industry standard.
What do "Light-ON" and "Dark-ON" modes mean in slot sensors?
These refer to the output logic. Light-ON (L.ON) means the output is active when the beam is NOT broken (the slot is empty). Dark-ON (D.ON) means the output is active when an object enters the slot and breaks the beam. Most XSZ slot sensors feature a control wire or switch that allows you to toggle between these two modes easily.
How high is the switching frequency for high-speed counting?
Our industrial-grade slot sensors support switching frequencies up to 5,000 Hz (5kHz). This allows the sensor to detect objects passing through the slot at extremely high speeds, such as teeth on a high-RPM encoder disc or small electronic components on a rapid assembly line, with a response time of less than 0.1ms.
How do I adjust the sensitivity for different object thicknesses?
Most of our fork sensors come with a multi-turn potentiometer. To calibrate, place the "background" (e.g., label backing paper) in the slot and turn the potentiometer until the indicator changes state. Then, test it with the "object" (e.g., the label). For more advanced models, we offer a One-Click Teach-in button that automatically sets the optimal threshold.
What slot widths are available for different machine designs?
We offer a wide range of standard slot widths, including 5mm, 10mm, 30mm, 50mm, and up to 120mm. The depth of the slot (the "throat") also varies to ensure that you can detect objects far from the edge of the mounting surface. Custom wide-slot versions are available for large-diameter conveyor applications.
Are these sensors resistant to dust and oil in factory environments?
Yes. Our slot sensors are rated IP65 or IP67, meaning they are protected against dust ingress and water splashes. The optical lenses are made of high-grade glass or PMMA that is resistant to common industrial oils.
