Retro-reflective Photoelectric Sensors

Retro-reflective Photoelectric Sensors for One-side Wiring.

XSZ retro-reflective photoelectric sensors detect objects by sending light to a reflector and receiving the returned beam. They are widely used on conveyors, packaging lines and machines where wiring on only one side is easier than installing a separate receiver.

  • Sensor and reflector layout for conveyor object detection
  • Good fit when one-side wiring is required
  • NPN / PNP, NO / NC, cable and connector support

Why Retro-reflective

Use retro-reflective sensing when you need object detection with simpler wiring

Retro-reflective sensors are easier to install than through-beam sensors because only one side needs electrical wiring. The opposite side uses a reflector, making them practical for conveyors, packaging machines and equipment frames.

One-side sensor wiring

The sensor sends and receives light from the same side, while the reflector returns the beam from the opposite side.

Good for conveyor objects

Use for cartons, bottles, bags, trays and parts moving across a clear detection path.

Flexible installation

It is useful when the machine frame allows a reflector but does not allow receiver wiring on the far side.

Application Range

For packaging, conveyors and object detection with reflector mounting

Retro-reflective photoelectric sensors are selected when a reflector can be mounted opposite the sensor and the machine benefits from wiring on one side only.

  • Carton, bottle, bag and tray detection on packaging lines
  • Conveyor object presence, counting and spacing control
  • Logistics, sorting and automated transfer equipment
  • Machine doors, frames and object interruption detection
  • Applications where through-beam wiring is difficult on the far side

Selection Guide

Choose by reflector distance, target surface and clear optical path

Retro-reflective sensing depends on the returned light from the reflector. Before ordering, confirm reflector position, target material, target transparency and whether shiny surfaces can reflect light back to the sensor.

Comparison

Retro-reflective vs through-beam: choose wiring simplicity or maximum margin

Retro-reflective sensors simplify wiring, while through-beam sensors usually provide stronger signal margin. The best choice depends on installation access, target surface and required reliability.

VS

Retro-reflective Sensor

  • Sensor and reflector are mounted on opposite sides
  • Electrical wiring is usually needed only on the sensor side
  • Good for conveyors, cartons, bottles and packaging lines
  • Reflective or transparent targets may need special selection

Through-beam Sensor

  • Transmitter and receiver are mounted on opposite sides
  • Usually stronger signal margin and longer detection range
  • Better for difficult targets and harsh line conditions
  • Requires two-sided wiring and more careful alignment
Avoid False Signals

Prevent problems from transparent targets, shiny surfaces and poor reflector alignment

Retro-reflective sensors depend on a clean returned beam. False signals can happen when the target does not block enough light or when a glossy object reflects light back to the sensor.

Risk

Transparent object passes through

Clear bottles, film and transparent packaging may allow too much light to return from the reflector.

Result

More stable interruption detection

Correct selection helps reduce false clear signals, missed bottles, unstable output and repeated commissioning work.

Configuration Options

Retro-reflective sensor options for OEM machines and replacement projects

XSZ supports model matching by reflector distance, housing style, output logic, cable requirement and target condition. Available options depend on the selected sensor series.

Sensor and reflector set

Select reflector size, reflector position and sensor housing based on detection distance and mounting tolerance.

Output and wiring

Confirm NPN or PNP, normally open or normally closed, voltage, cable length and connector requirement before sample production.

Optical matching

Choose sensing range and response time according to target material, transparency, reflectivity and line speed.

Selection Factors

Stable retro-reflective detection depends on reflector return and target blocking

Send real application details before ordering. The same sensor can perform differently on clear bottles, glossy labels, black cartons, dusty reflectors or vibrating conveyor frames.

FAQ

Retro-reflective Photoelectric Sensor FAQ

What is a retro-reflective photoelectric sensor used for?
A retro-reflective photoelectric sensor detects objects by sending light to a reflector and receiving the returned beam. It is used for conveyor detection, packaging lines, counting, presence checking and object interruption detection.
When should I choose retro-reflective instead of through-beam sensing?
Choose retro-reflective sensing when you want wiring on one side only and can mount a reflector on the opposite side. Choose through-beam when stronger signal margin or difficult target detection is more important.
Can retro-reflective sensors detect transparent objects?
Transparent objects can be difficult because they may let too much light return from the reflector. Clear bottles, film and transparent packaging require careful model selection and application testing.
Why does a retro-reflective sensor false trigger?
False triggering can be caused by poor reflector alignment, dirty reflectors, shiny targets, transparent objects, strong ambient light, vibration or a target surface that reflects light back to the sensor.
Can XSZ customize retro-reflective photoelectric sensors for OEM equipment?
Yes. XSZ supports OEM logo, label, cable length, connector type, output configuration, wiring diagram, packaging and application-based model selection depending on the selected sensor series.
