- NPN / PNP, NO / NC, cable and connector support
Detect objects that proximity sensors cannot handle well
Photoelectric sensors are used when the target may be non-metal, the sensing distance is longer, the object is moving quickly, or the machine needs non-contact detection with flexible mounting.
Longer optical detection range
Through-beam and retro-reflective models can detect objects over longer distances than many proximity sensors.
Works with many target materials
Detect cartons, bottles, bags, labels, plastic parts, metal parts and other objects depending on sensing mode and target surface.
Stable line control
Use photoelectric sensors for counting, presence detection, position checking, edge detection, label mark detection and missing-part verification.
Choose the photoelectric sensor by detection task
Different sensing modes solve different machine problems. Start with the target condition, available mounting space and required detection distance.
Match the sensing mode to the target and machine layout
The right photoelectric sensor depends on whether you can mount a transmitter, receiver or reflector, and whether the target is transparent, shiny, dark, small or fast moving.
| Sensing Mode | Best For | Key Advantage | Confirm Before Ordering |
|---|---|---|---|
| Through-beam | Long distance, high stability, fast line detection | Strong signal because transmitter and receiver are separated | Two-sided mounting space and alignment access |
| Retro-reflective | Conveyors, cartons, bottles and one-sided wiring layouts | Only one sensor side needs wiring, reflector returns the beam | Reflector position, target reflectivity and clear optical path |
| Diffuse | Simple presence detection with limited hardware | No separate receiver or reflector required | Target color, surface reflectivity and background distance |
| Background suppression | Objects in front of changing or reflective backgrounds | Helps ignore the background behind the target | Target distance, background distance and required adjustment range |
| Slot / Groove | Small part detection, edge checking and position confirmation | Fixed optical path gives repeatable detection in a compact slot | Slot width, part size, pass speed and mounting direction |
| Color mark | Label marks, print registration and packaging alignment | Detects contrast or color marks for position control | Mark color, background color, material surface and line speed |
Through-beam, retro-reflective or diffuse: which one fits your line?
These three modes cover many factory automation needs. The right choice depends on detection distance, installation access and how much the target surface changes during production.
Through-beam
Use when long distance and reliable object interruption are more important than simple installation. It needs transmitter and receiver alignment.
Retro-reflective
Use when you can mount a reflector opposite the sensor and want wiring on one side of a conveyor or machine frame.
Diffuse
Use for short to medium distance detection when the target reflectivity is stable and there is no strong background interference.
Prevent missed detection from transparent, shiny or dark targets
Photoelectric sensor failures often come from target surface changes, background reflections, ambient light, vibration, dust or poor alignment. Confirm these factors before selecting a model.
Transparent objects
Bottles, film and clear packaging may need a suitable retro-reflective, transparent-object or high-contrast solution.
Shiny or reflective surfaces
Metal, glossy plastic and reflective labels can return unexpected light. Sensing angle and mode selection are important.
Ambient light and dust
Strong sunlight, machine lighting, dust and oil mist may affect the optical path. Confirm enclosure, lens cleaning and installation direction.
Photoelectric sensor options for OEM machines and replacement projects
XSZ supports photoelectric sensor matching by sensing mode, housing style, output logic, cable requirement and machine environment. Available options depend on the selected model series.
Housing and mounting
Select compact square, cylindrical, groove or application-specific housing based on machine space and detection direction.
Output and wiring
Confirm NPN or PNP, normally open or normally closed, voltage, cable length and connector requirement before sample production.
Optical performance
Choose sensing distance, light source, response speed and adjustment method according to target size, color and line speed.
Stable photoelectric detection depends on target, distance and environment
Choose the sensor around real production conditions. Target material, color, speed, background, dust, water, oil and vibration can all change the final detection result.
| What to Confirm | Why It Matters | What to Send XSZ |
|---|---|---|
| Target details | Color, transparency and surface reflectivity affect optical sensing | Target photos, material, size, color and surface finish |
| Detection distance | Each mode has a different reliable sensing range | Minimum distance, maximum distance and installation drawing |
| Background condition | Reflective or moving backgrounds can cause false signals | Background material, distance behind target and machine photo |
| Line speed | Fast objects need suitable response time and signal duration | Conveyor speed, object spacing and required PLC input timing |
| Environment | Dust, water, oil mist, vibration and ambient light affect stability | Factory environment, IP requirement and cleaning condition |
| Output logic | Sensor signal must match the machine controller | NPN/PNP, NO/NC, voltage, cable or connector requirement |
