Why Photoelectric

Detect objects that proximity sensors cannot handle well

Photoelectric sensors are used when the target may be non-metal, the sensing distance is longer, the object is moving quickly, or the machine needs non-contact detection with flexible mounting.

Longer optical detection range

Through-beam and retro-reflective models can detect objects over longer distances than many proximity sensors.

Works with many target materials

Detect cartons, bottles, bags, labels, plastic parts, metal parts and other objects depending on sensing mode and target surface.

Stable line control

Use photoelectric sensors for counting, presence detection, position checking, edge detection, label mark detection and missing-part verification.

Selection Guide

Match the sensing mode to the target and machine layout

The right photoelectric sensor depends on whether you can mount a transmitter, receiver or reflector, and whether the target is transparent, shiny, dark, small or fast moving.

Sensing ModeBest ForKey AdvantageConfirm Before Ordering
Through-beamLong distance, high stability, fast line detectionStrong signal because transmitter and receiver are separatedTwo-sided mounting space and alignment access
Retro-reflectiveConveyors, cartons, bottles and one-sided wiring layoutsOnly one sensor side needs wiring, reflector returns the beamReflector position, target reflectivity and clear optical path
DiffuseSimple presence detection with limited hardwareNo separate receiver or reflector requiredTarget color, surface reflectivity and background distance
Background suppressionObjects in front of changing or reflective backgroundsHelps ignore the background behind the targetTarget distance, background distance and required adjustment range
Slot / GrooveSmall part detection, edge checking and position confirmationFixed optical path gives repeatable detection in a compact slotSlot width, part size, pass speed and mounting direction
Color markLabel marks, print registration and packaging alignmentDetects contrast or color marks for position controlMark color, background color, material surface and line speed
Common Choices

Through-beam, retro-reflective or diffuse: which one fits your line?

These three modes cover many factory automation needs. The right choice depends on detection distance, installation access and how much the target surface changes during production.

Easy Wiring

Retro-reflective

Use when you can mount a reflector opposite the sensor and want wiring on one side of a conveyor or machine frame.

Simple Setup

Diffuse

Use for short to medium distance detection when the target reflectivity is stable and there is no strong background interference.

Avoid False Signals

Prevent missed detection from transparent, shiny or dark targets

Photoelectric sensor failures often come from target surface changes, background reflections, ambient light, vibration, dust or poor alignment. Confirm these factors before selecting a model.

Transparent objects

Bottles, film and clear packaging may need a suitable retro-reflective, transparent-object or high-contrast solution.

Shiny or reflective surfaces

Metal, glossy plastic and reflective labels can return unexpected light. Sensing angle and mode selection are important.

Ambient light and dust

Strong sunlight, machine lighting, dust and oil mist may affect the optical path. Confirm enclosure, lens cleaning and installation direction.

Configuration Options

Photoelectric sensor options for OEM machines and replacement projects

XSZ supports photoelectric sensor matching by sensing mode, housing style, output logic, cable requirement and machine environment. Available options depend on the selected model series.

Housing and mounting

Select compact square, cylindrical, groove or application-specific housing based on machine space and detection direction.

Output and wiring

Confirm NPN or PNP, normally open or normally closed, voltage, cable length and connector requirement before sample production.

Optical performance

Choose sensing distance, light source, response speed and adjustment method according to target size, color and line speed.

Selection Factors

Stable photoelectric detection depends on target, distance and environment

Choose the sensor around real production conditions. Target material, color, speed, background, dust, water, oil and vibration can all change the final detection result.

FAQ

Photoelectric Sensor FAQ

What is a photoelectric sensor used for?
A photoelectric sensor detects objects using a light beam. It is used for presence detection, counting, positioning, label detection, edge checking, bottle detection and object verification on automation lines.
Which photoelectric sensing mode should I choose?
Choose through-beam for long distance and strong stability, retro-reflective for one-sided wiring with a reflector, diffuse for simple short-range detection, background suppression for difficult backgrounds, slot sensors for small parts and color mark sensors for printed marks.
Can photoelectric sensors detect transparent objects?
Yes, but transparent objects require careful selection because clear bottles, film and packaging transmit light. Share target photos, material and distance so XSZ can recommend a suitable sensing mode.
Why does a photoelectric sensor give false signals?
False signals can be caused by reflective surfaces, dark targets, transparent objects, strong ambient light, dust, oil mist, vibration, poor alignment or a background that reflects light back to the sensor.
Can XSZ customize photoelectric sensors for OEM equipment?
Yes. XSZ supports OEM logo, label, cable length, connector type, output configuration, wiring diagram, packaging and application-based model selection depending on the selected sensor series.
