CE Certification for Industrial Sensors: What Buyers Must Verify

CE marking is a manufacturer's declaration—not an EU-issued approval. Check the applicable rules, the signed declaration and whether the evidence covers the sensor you will receive.

What does CE marking actually mean for an industrial sensor?

“CE certification” is a common purchasing term, but CE marking is the more accurate starting point. The manufacturer is responsible for assessing conformity, preparing the technical documentation, issuing the declaration and applying the mark. More than one EU law can apply to the same sensor.

Self-assessment is not the same as no assessment

Where the applicable rules permit internal production control, a manufacturer can complete the process without buying a commercial “CE certificate.” That does not remove the need for risk assessment, suitable evidence or production controls.

A laboratory may perform tests; a notified body may carry out a defined assessment where the route calls for one. Neither arrangement transfers the manufacturer's responsibility for the finished sensor.

The CE symbol is also not proof of EU manufacture, EU authority approval or superior sensing performance. A correctly drawn mark cannot tell you whether the declaration or report belongs to the product in your quotation.

Which EU rules apply to your sensor?

Start with the product as supplied: its function, voltage ratings, interfaces, accessories and intended environment. “Industrial sensor” is not a single legal classification. Ask for a reasoned scope decision, not the longest possible list of directives.

Does a 24 VDC sensor still need CE marking?

Often, yes. A typical finished electronic sensor may fall within the EMC Directive 2014/30/EU and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, as amended, even if it is outside the Low Voltage Directive. Confirm the actual product scope and any applicable exclusions.

The Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU covers equipment designed for rated voltages of 50–1,000 VAC or 75–1,500 VDC. A sensor with only low-voltage input and output circuits is normally below those limits. But a 24 VDC supply does not settle the question if, for example, an output circuit is rated to switch mains voltage.

A useful supplier question: “This model uses 24 VDC. Which rules require its CE marking, and which input or output ratings support your LVD scope decision?” A declaration listing only LVD for an ordinary low-voltage electronic sensor needs clarification; it does not establish the rest of the compliance case.

EMC concerns emissions and immunity under the intended conditions of use. RoHS addresses restricted substances in electrical and electronic equipment within its scope. A general-purpose sensor is not automatically excluded from RoHS merely because the buyer installs it in a large industrial machine.

What changes when the sensor includes radio?

Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or another intentional radio interface can bring the Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU into the review. RED includes health and safety, electromagnetic compatibility and radio-spectrum requirements. A low supply voltage does not remove that review, and a radio-module report alone does not establish conformity of the completed sensor.

For connected products, ask which cybersecurity provisions apply to the actual functions and market-placement date. Selected RED cybersecurity requirements have applied since 1 August 2025. Cyber Resilience Act reporting obligations start on 11 September 2026, with its main requirements applying from 11 December 2027. CRA scope is not limited to wireless products.

The RED cybersecurity delegated rules in Regulation 2022/30 are scheduled to be repealed by Regulation 2026/339 from 11 December 2027. That does not repeal RED itself. Do not treat a future transition date as an exemption from requirements already applicable to the product.

What if the sensor is used for safety or in an explosive atmosphere?

A separately supplied safety component can bring machinery legislation into scope. The Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC is replaced by Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 from 20 January 2027. Confirm the product classification and conformity route; simply describing a standard sensor as “safe” does not establish safety-component suitability.

For potentially explosive atmospheres, review ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU, the exact Ex marking, equipment category, intended atmosphere and installation conditions. Ordinary CE evidence or an IP rating does not establish explosion protection.

An ATEX component without an autonomous function has a different documentation treatment: ATEX requires a written attestation rather than CE marking under ATEX alone. Establish whether the supplied item is equipment or a component before requesting the wrong document.

Which documents should you request from the supplier?

Request the signed EU Declaration of Conformity, the current datasheet and installation instructions, plus enough supporting evidence to understand model coverage. These documents serve different purposes; an impressive certificate cover cannot replace all of them.

Read the document's purpose before treating it as approval evidence.

What should the declaration identify?

Check the required format under each applicable act. In practical terms, you should be able to identify the manufacturer and address, the product or type, the statement of responsibility, the relevant EU legislation, the standards or other technical specifications used, and the name, function, date and signature of the person signing on the manufacturer's behalf. Include notified-body information where the procedure requires it.

A product-family declaration can be valid. The exact ordering code does not have to appear on the front page if a controlled annex or clear model-code definition unambiguously includes it. “All proximity sensors,” with no usable mapping, is a different matter.

Do buyers have a right to the entire technical file?

The manufacturer must maintain the required technical documentation and make it available to the competent authorities as required. That is not the same as an ordinary customer having an automatic right to every proprietary drawing, calculation and component record.

Agree on a proportionate evidence package: relevant report sections, model-coverage explanations and revision information may answer the purchasing question, with confidential material handled under an NDA where appropriate. An importer must also ensure the required documentation can be made available to the authorities; “our laboratory has it” is not a sufficient access arrangement.

How can you tell whether the evidence covers your exact model?

Follow the identity from quotation to label, then from the declaration to its supporting records. A shared housing or series name is not enough. Equally, a different suffix does not automatically mean the evidence is unusable.

Match the configuration, not just the product photograph

For a sensor, relevant differences can include the PCB revision, output circuit, connector or integral cable, shielding, enclosure, antenna, accessories and firmware. Ask which configurations were assessed and how the manufacturer established coverage of untested variants.

Read the test conditions too. Cable length, grounding, power supply, output load and operating mode can matter. A report's pass result must be understood together with its performance criteria and installation restrictions. The separate sensor EMC guide explains why this matters on a machine.

Check what the cited standard actually supports

An EN or IEC number is not a blanket approval. Match the standard's scope and edition to the assessment. Where the manufacturer relies on a harmonised standard for presumption of conformity, check its Official Journal reference under the relevant EU act, including restrictions and applicable withdrawal dates.

Harmonised standards are voluntary. A justified alternative technical solution can demonstrate compliance, but the supplier should explain how it addresses the relevant requirements. Neither “the newest edition” nor “an IEC report” automatically answers that legal question.

Illustrative example: the cable model was tested, but the order uses a connector

This fictional document review uses invented model codes; it is not a customer case or an xsz sensor product claim. A buyer orders PX12-PNP-M12, a 24 VDC wired sensor. The supplier provides a signed family declaration listing EMC and RoHS, an annex, a manual and an EMC report for PX12-PNP-2M.

The review separates confirmed coverage from an unresolved evidence gap.

Decision: do not release this variant yet. The missing link is evidence of coverage, not proof that the sensor failed a test. A documented engineering justification and any necessary additional assessment may resolve it; a completely new test campaign is not automatically required for every suffix.

Close this particular review item only when the connector configuration and delivery revision are traceable to adequate evidence. That still does not constitute a complete legal review or approve the sensor's performance in the buyer's machine.

When is a notified body needed, and how do you verify one?

A notified body is needed when the applicable legislation and conformity-assessment route require its involvement. There is no universal requirement to buy third-party certification for every CE-marked sensor. For example, the Low Voltage Directive does not require a notified body.

A manufacturer's chosen, legally permitted route may also include a notified body even where another route is available. Ask what procedure was used and what the body assessed. Laboratory accreditation, notification for a particular EU act and a voluntary certification service are different things.

  1. Identify the document and legal role. Read the certificate title, number, product scope, legal basis and assessment module. Establish whether it is a notified-body document or a commercial test/certification statement.
  2. Check the body in NANDO. Match its legal name, identification number, relevant legislation and authorised tasks. A body listed for one activity is not automatically notified for every sensor or directive.
  3. Confirm the document with its issuer. Use independently located official contact details or the issuer's verification service. Check the certificate, annexes, model coverage and status. A genuine body number can appear on an unrelated or altered document.

NANDO verifies notification and scope; it is not a universal certificate-authenticity database. Nor is a four-digit number beside the CE mark a general quality score. Under rules such as ATEX, that number accompanies the mark when the body is involved in the production-control phase—not simply because a laboratory tested a sample.

Does CE marking expire, or change when you rebrand a sensor?

CE marking has no general renewal date. But the product must remain compliant, its documentation must remain appropriate, and any certificate conditions still need to be respected. An old document is not automatically invalid; an old assessment that no longer covers the product is a real issue.

Do not confuse record retention with certificate validity

Technical documentation and declarations commonly have a ten-year retention requirement under the relevant product rules. That is not a ten-year “CE licence.” Check the specific legislation for the retention period and when it starts.

Review changes to components, firmware, radio functions, enclosure, production sources and intended use. Also check legal transitions against when the individual product is placed on the market, subject to the applicable transitional provisions—not only when the series was first launched.

Private labelling changes the responsibility question

If you market a sensor under your own name or trademark, you can take on the manufacturer's obligations. Changes that affect conformity can also alter your responsibilities. An OEM's report does not, by itself, create a complete conformity package for a newly branded product.

Before agreeing to private-label supply, settle who signs the declaration, maintains the technical file, controls design changes and handles corrective action. An importer must verify the manufacturer's required steps and documentation arrangements; a distributor must exercise due care. Those roles should not disappear behind the phrase “the factory handles CE.”

What must you still verify before using the sensor in a machine?

Product conformity and machine suitability are separate decisions. A complete CE package does not prove that the sensor will detect your target reliably, match your PLC input or achieve the required safety performance after installation.

  • Detection: test the real material, size, finish, speed and worst-case position, including contamination and background conditions.
  • Electrical integration: confirm supply limits, PNP/NPN or other interface, load, pinout, cable arrangement and response timing against the actual control system.
  • Environment: check temperature, vibration, washdown, chemicals and installation conditions. Read IP and other ratings as specific claims with conditions.
  • Safety and final assembly: where relevant, validate the complete safety function, stopping performance and protective arrangement. CE on one sensor does not establish the machine's required PL/SIL or the conformity of the assembled machine.

Use the sensor datasheet guide to separate ratings from application assumptions. Keep the production trial result and approved configuration alongside the supplier's document package, rather than treating either one as a substitute for the other.

For your next enquiry: identify the exact model, destination market, supply and outputs, any radio or safety function, and the intended environment. Ask the supplier for the relevant declaration, instructions, model-coverage evidence and change-notification arrangement.
