Flush vs Non-flush

Choose the mounting style before confirming the final model

Mounting style changes both installation flexibility and sensing distance. A correct choice helps avoid unstable signals caused by nearby metal brackets or machine frames.

Flush Inductive Sensor

  • Can be embedded into a metal bracket
  • Better protection against mechanical impact
  • Usually has shorter sensing distance than non-flush types
  • Good for compact machines and standard position detection

Is the target large enough?

Catalog sensing distance is usually tested with a standard metal target. Smaller targets may require a shorter working distance or larger sensor size.

Is there surrounding metal?

Nearby brackets, frames or machine plates can affect detection. Flush and non-flush models need different installation clearance.

Does the output match your PLC?

Confirm voltage, NPN/PNP, NO/NC, two-wire or three-wire connection, cable length and connector type before wiring the machine.

Sensing Distance Factors

Actual sensing distance depends on more than the catalog number

For stable machine use, leave enough margin between rated sensing distance and the real working distance. This reduces missed detection caused by material, movement or installation variation.

Target size and material

Large steel targets are easier to detect. Smaller parts, aluminum, copper or irregular shapes may require a shorter working distance or a larger sensor.

Mounting and surrounding metal

Flush and non-flush sensors need different clearance. Nearby brackets, machine frames and metal plates can affect the sensing field.

Movement and tolerance

Vibration, side approach, loose brackets and changing target positions reduce reliable detection. Reserve margin for real production movement.

Inductive Proximity Sensor FAQ

What can an inductive proximity sensor detect?
An inductive proximity sensor detects metal targets such as iron, steel, aluminum, copper, brass and stainless steel. It is not suitable for detecting plastic, glass, paper, liquid or powder directly.
How do I choose flush or non-flush mounting?
Choose flush mounting when the sensor must be embedded in a metal bracket. Choose non-flush mounting when you need more sensing distance and can keep enough clearance from surrounding metal.
Why is the actual sensing distance shorter than the rated distance?
Rated distance is usually tested with a standard target. Smaller targets, different metal materials, side approach, vibration and nearby metal can reduce the practical sensing distance.
How do I choose NPN or PNP output?
Choose NPN or PNP based on your PLC or controller input type. If you are unsure, send your PLC model or wiring diagram to XSZ for confirmation before ordering.
