Why Diffuse

Use diffuse sensing when you need a simple sensor on one side of the machine

Diffuse photoelectric sensors are easy to install because the target reflects light back to the sensor. They are suitable when the target surface is stable and the background does not create strong interference.

No reflector needed

Install the sensor on one side only. This reduces hardware and simplifies mounting for short-range object detection.

Good for simple targets

Use for cartons, parts, trays, bags and objects with stable color, size and surface reflection.

Fast production checks

Suitable for presence detection, counting, position checking and missing-object verification on automation lines.

Application Range

For short-range detection where simple one-sided installation is preferred

Diffuse photoelectric sensors are selected when the machine does not need a reflector or separate receiver, and the target reflection is strong enough for stable detection.

  • Carton, tray, bag and part presence detection
  • Short-range object counting on conveyor lines
  • Position checking on assembly and packaging equipment
  • Missing-object detection in automated handling systems
  • Simple detection tasks where target color and background are stable

Selection Guide

Choose by target color, surface reflectivity and background distance

Diffuse sensing depends on light reflected from the target. Before ordering, confirm the real target material, target color, working distance and what is behind the target.

Selection PointCustomer ProblemRecommended CheckInformation to Provide
Target colorBlack or dark targets return less lightCheck the darkest target used in productionTarget photos, color range and material
Surface finishGlossy or uneven surfaces create unstable reflectionConfirm surface angle, texture and object movementSurface photos, object shape and passing direction
Working distanceSignal becomes unstable outside the practical rangeMeasure the closest and farthest target positionsMinimum distance, maximum distance and tolerance
BackgroundThe sensor may detect the surface behind the targetMeasure background distance and reflectivityBackground color, material and distance behind target

Comparison

Diffuse vs background suppression: choose simple detection or better background control

Diffuse sensors are simple and cost-effective for easy targets. Background suppression sensors are better when the background creates false signals or the target color changes often.

VS

Diffuse Photoelectric Sensor

  • One-sided sensor installation without reflector
  • Simple and cost-effective for stable targets
  • Good for short-range presence and counting tasks
  • Performance depends on target color and reflectivity

Background Suppression Sensor

  • Better when the background causes false triggering
  • Useful for mixed target colors and changing surfaces
  • Helps ignore surfaces behind the target by distance
  • Requires correct distance setting and application matching
Avoid Unstable Detection

Prevent missed signals caused by target color, glare and background reflection

Diffuse sensors are convenient, but they can become unstable if the target changes color, the surface is shiny, or a reflective background is too close behind the target.

Risk

Only testing with one target color

A white sample may work well, while black, transparent or glossy versions may return much less reliable light.

Result

Fewer sample changes

Correct selection helps reduce missed detection, false signals, unstable output and repeated commissioning work.

Configuration Options

Diffuse sensor options for OEM machines and replacement projects

XSZ supports model matching by target distance, housing style, output logic, cable requirement and machine environment. Available options depend on the selected sensor series.

Housing and mounting

Select compact square, cylindrical or application-specific housing based on installation space and detection direction.

Output and wiring

Confirm NPN or PNP, normally open or normally closed, voltage, cable length and connector requirement before sample production.

Optical matching

Choose sensing range and response time according to target material, color, surface reflection and line speed.

Selection Factors

Stable diffuse detection depends on target reflection and background control

Send real application details before ordering. The same diffuse sensor can perform differently on white cartons, black plastic, glossy labels, curved objects or reflective machine panels.

FAQ

Diffuse Photoelectric Sensor FAQ

What is a diffuse photoelectric sensor used for?
A diffuse photoelectric sensor detects objects by receiving light reflected from the target surface. It is used for presence detection, counting, position checking and missing-object detection in short to medium range applications.
When should I choose diffuse instead of retro-reflective sensing?
Choose diffuse sensing when you want a simple one-sided sensor and the target surface reflects light reliably. Choose retro-reflective sensing when a reflector can be used and longer or more stable beam interruption is needed.
Why does target color affect diffuse photoelectric sensing?
Diffuse sensing depends on reflected light from the target. White or bright targets usually return more light, while black, dark, transparent or absorbent materials may reduce sensing distance and stability.
When should I use background suppression instead of diffuse?
Use background suppression when the sensor detects the background behind the target, or when target colors and surfaces vary enough to make ordinary diffuse detection unstable.
Can XSZ customize diffuse photoelectric sensors for OEM equipment?
Yes. XSZ supports OEM logo, label, cable length, connector type, output configuration, wiring diagram, packaging and application-based model selection depending on the selected sensor series.
