Diffuse Photoelectric Sensors for Simple Object Detection.
XSZ diffuse photoelectric sensors detect objects by receiving light reflected from the target itself. They are a simple one-sided solution for short to medium distance detection on packaging lines, conveyors, assembly machines and automation equipment.
- No reflector or separate receiver required
- Good fit for simple presence, counting and position detection
- NPN / PNP, NO / NC, cable and connector support
Use diffuse sensing when you need a simple sensor on one side of the machine
Diffuse photoelectric sensors are easy to install because the target reflects light back to the sensor. They are suitable when the target surface is stable and the background does not create strong interference.
No reflector needed
Install the sensor on one side only. This reduces hardware and simplifies mounting for short-range object detection.
Good for simple targets
Use for cartons, parts, trays, bags and objects with stable color, size and surface reflection.
Fast production checks
Suitable for presence detection, counting, position checking and missing-object verification on automation lines.
For short-range detection where simple one-sided installation is preferred
Diffuse photoelectric sensors are selected when the machine does not need a reflector or separate receiver, and the target reflection is strong enough for stable detection.
- Carton, tray, bag and part presence detection
- Short-range object counting on conveyor lines
- Position checking on assembly and packaging equipment
- Missing-object detection in automated handling systems
- Simple detection tasks where target color and background are stable
Choose by target color, surface reflectivity and background distance
Diffuse sensing depends on light reflected from the target. Before ordering, confirm the real target material, target color, working distance and what is behind the target.
| Selection Point | Customer Problem | Recommended Check | Information to Provide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Target color | Black or dark targets return less light | Check the darkest target used in production | Target photos, color range and material |
| Surface finish | Glossy or uneven surfaces create unstable reflection | Confirm surface angle, texture and object movement | Surface photos, object shape and passing direction |
| Working distance | Signal becomes unstable outside the practical range | Measure the closest and farthest target positions | Minimum distance, maximum distance and tolerance |
| Background | The sensor may detect the surface behind the target | Measure background distance and reflectivity | Background color, material and distance behind target |
| Line speed | Fast objects create short signal duration | Match response time to conveyor speed and object spacing | Conveyor speed, object spacing and PLC input timing |
Diffuse vs background suppression: choose simple detection or better background control
Diffuse sensors are simple and cost-effective for easy targets. Background suppression sensors are better when the background creates false signals or the target color changes often.
Diffuse Photoelectric Sensor
- One-sided sensor installation without reflector
- Simple and cost-effective for stable targets
- Good for short-range presence and counting tasks
- Performance depends on target color and reflectivity
Background Suppression Sensor
- Better when the background causes false triggering
- Useful for mixed target colors and changing surfaces
- Helps ignore surfaces behind the target by distance
- Requires correct distance setting and application matching
Prevent missed signals caused by target color, glare and background reflection
Diffuse sensors are convenient, but they can become unstable if the target changes color, the surface is shiny, or a reflective background is too close behind the target.
Only testing with one target color
A white sample may work well, while black, transparent or glossy versions may return much less reliable light.
Test the hardest target
Share the darkest, smallest, fastest and most reflective target so XSZ can recommend the right sensing mode.
Fewer sample changes
Correct selection helps reduce missed detection, false signals, unstable output and repeated commissioning work.
Diffuse sensor options for OEM machines and replacement projects
XSZ supports model matching by target distance, housing style, output logic, cable requirement and machine environment. Available options depend on the selected sensor series.
Housing and mounting
Select compact square, cylindrical or application-specific housing based on installation space and detection direction.
Output and wiring
Confirm NPN or PNP, normally open or normally closed, voltage, cable length and connector requirement before sample production.
Optical matching
Choose sensing range and response time according to target material, color, surface reflection and line speed.
Stable diffuse detection depends on target reflection and background control
Send real application details before ordering. The same diffuse sensor can perform differently on white cartons, black plastic, glossy labels, curved objects or reflective machine panels.
| What to Confirm | Why It Matters | What to Send XSZ |
|---|---|---|
| Target material and color | Light return depends strongly on target surface | Photos, material, darkest color and brightest color |
| Target size and shape | Small or curved targets may return less stable light | Size, shape, orientation and passing direction |
| Working distance | The target must stay inside the reliable sensing range | Closest distance, farthest distance and tolerance |
| Background distance | Nearby background can cause false signals | Background material, color and distance behind target |
| Environment | Dust, water, oil mist and ambient light affect optical stability | IP requirement, cleaning condition and ambient light exposure |
| Controller input | Output logic must match the PLC or controller | NPN/PNP, NO/NC, voltage, cable or connector requirement |
Send target and background details for faster model matching
XSZ can help compare target color, reflectivity, working distance, background condition, line speed and wiring requirement before sample ordering.

Manufacturer support for diffuse photoelectric sensor projects
For distributors, machine builders and automation integrators, XSZ supports diffuse sensor selection, OEM presentation and stable repeat orders for simple optical detection tasks.
Compare nearby optical sensing options before ordering
If the target color changes, the background is close, or the sensing distance is longer, another photoelectric mode may be more stable than diffuse sensing.
